I started working in a small four-person graphic design company with a specialty in catalogs, book covers, and 4-color interior books. The great thing about this company was we did everything. We got art from illustrators, products from the vendor, and a word document. Then we did the rest. It taught me organization, styling, work process, photography, the design programs, and how to design (although I learn new things all the time).
After that job I moved onto a publishing company, where I am able to see the inside workings of book publishing. This has given me a better sense of how a book actually gets created, a chance to hear all the voices (and opinions) involved and to learn how to enjoy the teamwork that’s needed.
A couple years back I had to ask myself: do I really want to do this—graphic design—with my life? I settled on four aspects of graphic design that I really love that made me answer yes: to create, design, encourage and serve. If I can do any of these four things, I really enjoy what I do. So that’s the kind of work that gets me excited. Now I try to bring that experience to the authors/companies that I work for.
When not working I try to spend time with my family, golf or sleep. I lead a pretty simple life.
